Google Glass hits the racetrack

With the popularity of action cameras from GoPro and Contour in motorsports, it was only a matter of time before the video camera-equipped Google Glass found its way onto a racetrack. And that time is now.

Actually, it was last week when we took one to the Monticello Motor Club for a lap of the track in a Cadillac CTS-V. Stick all of the GoPros you want onto your helmet, you won’t get closer to your own point of view than one of these.

That is assuming you can get it on under your helmet. In its current “Explorer” beta form, it has a small but chunky CPU/Battery housing built into the right temple of the device that makes it a little tough to jam between the padding of a helmet and your skull. Open face designs seem to work best, but it’s still difficult to get it into position as perfectly as when your head is au naturel.

Unfortunately, our original plan to bring it with us during a test drive of the raucous Aston Martin Vantage GT4 race car was nixed by a scheduling conflict, thanks to the hot device's popularity around the Fox News offices, which turned out to be a bit of a shame.

On the day we finally made it to Monticello, the track was damp and not fully closed or staffed, so our speed was limited. But that might be for the better. We weren’t there to set a record, simply to see how the Google Glass performs as an in-car camera. We’ll leave the first accident recorded on it for someone else to share.

As for our experience, considering the size of the camera, basically what you get in a smartphone, the image quality was excellent. It shoots at 720p resolution, not full HD, but the result was a picture with color and clarity on par with or better than many of the last generation action cameras. The angle of view is wide, but not crazy fisheye wide, and there is none of that wobbly jelly effect endemic to video shot on cameras like the GoPro Hero.

Changes in contrast were handled with noticeably abrupt exposure steps, however, and while thirty minutes of footage used about 1gb of the 12gb of memory available, it also drained nearly all of the battery, so bring your recharger to fill up between lapping sessions.

Most impressive was the audio quality. The built-in microphone is very voice-centric, and cuts out much of the ambient noise. Upon hearing it for the first time, my editors thought I’d laid down the audio track in a studio. It’s really that clear. Wind will rustle it, but inside a car with closed windows it lets in just the best of the background noise.

If they can get the form factor down a size or two by the time it enters production, the Google Glass is potentially a much less cumbersome way to preserve your hot laps than all the clamps and suction mounts you have to deal with today. And as silly as it looks while walking down the street, with the tinted shield attached it’s much cooler than having a camera stuck to the top or side of your helmet.

An even more interesting prospect is the Google Glass’ potential to wirelessly feed live video via Wi-Fi or a tethered smartphone while you’re on track, turning it into a personalized version of Speed. Granted, devices like the Looxcie can already do this sort of thing, but they don’t also let you search the internet for lug nut torque settings via voice commands, or help you find the nearest place to get a nitrogen fill for your tires. Down the road, the possibility of using it as a head-up display for live diagnostic and performance applications like Dynolicous Fusion could render dash-mounted gauges and monitors redundant.

Although it’s surely not being optimized for use in automobiles, the likelihood that the production version of the Google Glass will have a higher resolution camera and a smaller size that’s better integrated into its frame could make this a very popular option at the track.

In the meantime, while we were at Monticello, the Executive Vice President of the facility came rolling by on his Segway, as EVPs often do, and we couldn’t resist taking it for a spin, literally. The Google Glass was in its element in this situation, unfettered from the confines of a helmet and getting a little quality time with the only thing on the planet that could possibly make you look like more of a nerd than wearing it. Of course, that image may change in a hurry once someone named Kurt or Travis or Dario shows up at a race wearing one.

Don’t bother hunting for pornography with Google’s new wearable gizmo. There’s nary a naughty bit in sight -- not through the rose-colored world of Google Glass, anyway. But what you can see is a pretty incredible glimpse of the future.

A PG-13 glimpse, that is; the adult-film industry is taking a pass on Glass, for now.

"We've decided to take a wait-and-see approach to Google Glass,” Steven Hirsch, founder and co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment, told FoxNews.com. “We want to see how quickly our target audience chooses to adapt it before we make any decision to move ahead."

Peter Acworth, CEO of San Francisco-based Kink.com, told the Silicon Valley Business Journal that Glass "opens up new opportunities for reality-based films. You could film picking up someone at a bar and taking them home. It takes the whole genre of POV and reality productions one stage further."

A company spokesman told FoxNews.com it doesn’t plan to act on that vision, however: “No explicit plans yet,” Kink’s Michael Stabile told FoxNews.com.

What Glass will do is remarkable, however -- and it’s great for kids for now, thanks to what appears to be parent-friendly, “moderate” search filter settings and this laid-back attitude from the sex industry.

While Glass often presents search results as text, for example, it will readily show you pictures. To find images, search for “pictures of ducks” or “images of dinosaurs” and a colorful row of icons will fill your vision rather than typography.

And Glass shows videos beautifully, although for now, it’s just those you’ve taken yourself. The gadget lets you upload them to Google+, along with all the images you’ve taken, and share them easily with groups or everyone.

What of YouTube, you ask? Install one of the first apps released for Glass, from independent YouTube network Fullscreen, for the ability to share videos directly on YouTube. With Fullscreen BEAM, you can upload to your channel privately or share the link to it on Twitter, the company says.

“Our engineering team loves building better experiences for digital video creators every day,” wrote Drew Baumann, founding engineer for the company, in a post announcing the software.

But you can’t browse YouTube videos with that app, nor search directly with the search engine built into Glass. Nor can you watch movie trailers. Or browse your Facebook news feed. Or visit much of the web.

Indeed, Glass is fairly limited at present, until the developers currently playing with it build the sort of robust apps that made smartphones so darn powerful.

But they have wonderful, wonderful ideas.

Take Andrew Vanden Heuvel, for example, the physics professor who gave a high-school science class at South Christian in Grand Rapids, Mich., a proton’s-eye view of the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva -- the same place where scientists recently may have found the long sought Higgs Boson.

Google flew Vanden Heuvel to Geneva, where he ran a digital “hangout” with the entire class -- live from within the 17-mile long cutting-edge science project.

“I had a marathon tour of the Large Hadron Collider. We saw two of the large detectors, the huge tunnel … we really did make a live connection, so the kids could see what I saw,” Vanden Heuvel told FoxNews.com.

While online-only institutions such as the Khan Academy are transforming education, Vanden Heuvel thinks experiences like the one he and his kids shared at CERN may signal an equally big transformation on teaching.

“In a lot of ways I’m living in the future of education. For me it’s a very relevant tool,” he said. Vanden Heuvel has been posting bite-size science videos to YouTube, thanks to Glass. Watch his first few at stembite.com.

“I see science everywhere I look,” he said.

But until the apps arrive, Google Glass is more promise than powerful. And by the time they arrive, the porn may show up too. It only stands to reason that the most common uses for the web will propagate to Glass, as they did for smartphones and other connected gadgets.

“We are not aware of any adult applications for Google Glass, but Urban Dictionary’s RULE34 states: if it exists there is porn on it," Tony Farrow of ICM Registry, the operators of the .XXX domain, told FoxNews.com.

For now, curse at Google and you’ll see a cleaned up, kid-friendly version of your query: “Web results for what the F*** Google Glass.”

And for now, that's probably okay.

Google Glass is the future – and the future has awful battery life

The concept of wearable tech is really buzzing right now as pundits tout smart eyewear, watches and other connected devices as the future of tech. It makes sense, of course — smartphone growth is slowing and people need something to hold on to — but the early “Explorer” version of Google’s highly anticipated Google Glass headset has major problem that could be a big barrier for widespread adoption: Awful battery life.

Battery longevity is a problem that plagues all portable consumer electronics. Just imagine how much easier life would be if you could go days or even a week without charging your laptop, smartphone and tablet. Where smartphones are concerned, we have now accepted the reality of battery limitations and adopted the routine of charging our phones about once a day with normal usage.

Charging a handset once a day is fair for a portable device that has become such a core part of our lives. The bar has been set. And as industry watchers try desperately to convince us that wearable tech is the next big thing, serious concerns about battery life are now arising.

Things are looking good where smartwatches are concerned. The popular Pebble seems to go between five and seven days before it needs to be charged thanks to the low-power E Ink display, and Apple is reportedly aiming to build an “iWatch” that lasts between four and five days per charge. But for all the hype surrounding another category of wearable devices — connected eyewear — early tests with Google Glass suggest battery performance may be absolutely awful.

In a review of the Google Glass Explorer Edition headset, Engadget’s Tim Stevens paints a worrying picture of the device’s battery life. With what he considers to be average usage that included reading emails and capturing short videos as well as some photos, Glass only lasted Stevens five hours before it “unceremoniously shut itself down.” That’s pretty bad, but it gets worse. If the user captures longer videos and uses Glass a bit more regularly, Stevens believes the headset will only last “a couple of hours” before the battery dies.

A device that only lasts two hours between charges is not the future of tech.

Google’s Explorer Edition headsets may still undergo some changes before Google Glass launches next year, and battery life clearly needs to be a focus if Glass is to be anything beyond an expensive niche toy destined to gather dust in a drawer a few short weeks after being purchased.

Thanks to a glaringly obvious security flaw in the futuristic Google Glass wearable computer, a hacker could within minutes take control of the device -- seeing what you look at, hearing what you hear, experiencing life through your senses.

“If the camera is on your head and the microphone is on your head, I’m seeing through your eyes, I’m hearing through your ears. The only thing I can’t get access to are smells in the room and your thoughts,” Jay “saurik” Freeman told FoxNews.com.

Google Glass is the Internet giant’s vision of an always-on, digitally connected future, disguised as a pair of glassless eyeglasses. It’s a lopsided hunk of plastic, silicon and titanium with a video camera and microphone that rides in the glass frame over the user’s eyebrow.

And hackers can get on board Glass, Freeman said, thanks to 16 characters of XML code (“Allow backup = false”) and a simple fact: Unlike any Android-based tablet or smartphone, there’s no security built into Google Glass at present. No lock screen, no voice command code, nothing.

“Put some security mechanism in place. That solves the vast majority of the issue,” Freeman said. He detailed the security issue in a lengthy webpost.

Google said it has shipped 500 or 600 models to developers, not consumers, partly to build apps and find exploits like this one. People like Freeman are helping ensure that the eventual shipping product will be secure, in other words.

Besides, Glass doesn’t access many parts of a Google account, the company noted, including settings on many products. And your personal MyGlass site on Google's servers allows you to wipe all the data off the device if you misplace it or it's stolen.

That said, the flaw exists, and Google is working on it, a spokesman told FoxNews.com.

"We recognize the importance of building device-specific protections, and we’re experimenting with solutions as we work to make Glass more broadly available," he said.

The 31-year old Freeman lives in Santa Barbara, where he created and manages Sadia, the alternative app store for iPhones. Until the flaw is patched, he said, the potential problems of the security exploit reach well beyond Google’s latest gizmo. Imagine you sit down at your computer wearing glass. Someone can see your computer monitor, watching the sites you visit and what you type.

“By hacking Glass, you’ve also hacked my computer,” Freeman said, noting that passwords are easily recorded. At that point. Or anything else the wearer happens to be looking at.

“I type door codes in order to get into computer labs and corporate buildings,” he told FoxNews.com. “and it’s not just door codes. If you take a picture of a key you can replicate it,” he said.

“Suddenly the security of my home is no longer guaranteed,” he said.

Hands on: 18 hours with Google Glass

Today is my first full day as a cyborg.

I’ve spent the past 18 or so hours wearing Google Glass -- the Internet giant’s vision of an always-on, digitally connected future, disguised as a pair of glassless eyeglasses.

Looking past the double-takes and outright stares from everyone looking at me, it’s easy to see the potential of this crazy gizmo. But for now, well, it’s weird being one of the borg.

Glass is a lopsided yet oddly comfortable hunk of plastic, silicon and titanium. The brains of my device were housed in two hunks of gray plastic, all on the right side (and no, there’s currently no option to swap sides). Google has versions in a variety of colors, including a gorgeous bright orange. If you’re going to call attention to yourself, may as well do it in style.

At the back is a battery and a tiny speaker that rests against your head, and uses the bones in your skull to amplify its output. The front contains the camera, processor and a tiny display screen -- your interface to the world of Google.

I picked mine up from Google’s temporary Glass office in New York. And after a 90-minute walkthrough with several “Glass guides,” I was ready to set out in the world.

I found using Glass to be remarkably intuitive and straightforward. Others who tried it had mixed luck, however, which mainly revealed an eagerness to play around without knowing what exactly to do. The lesson: Read the directions.

Tap the touch-sensitive temple piece or simply tilt your head up and the screen activates, displaying the time and two words: “Ok Glass.” Speak them aloud and the voice-activated device gives you a menu with a few simple options: Google, take a picture, record a video, get directions, send a message, make a call, hang out.

Ask the device to Google something and, thanks to a Bluetooth link to your smartphone or the built-in Wi-Fi, it will search the Web almost immediately. I tried Googling the length of the Golden Gate bridge (8,980 feet), how to say “I love you” in Japanese (“Watashi wa anata o aishite”), and checking the weather (“No, it isn’t raining in New York, the weather is 58 and clear”).

The future is a robotic voice literally telling me to skip the raincoat, apparently.

Pictures with Glass are reasonably good; it has a 5 megapixel camera, comparable to that of a newish smartphone. That’s not the greatest quality, but it works. I immediately found myself wanting to edit images, crop out the backgrounds and boost the colors. You can do that all on Google+, of course, but there’s little interface directly through Glass itself.

The real charm of Glass comes in sharing, however, not touching your temples. Glass integrates deeply with Google+, which you’re probably a member of already, like it or not. It’s no Facebook, sure, but it does have tens of millions of users.

Using the simple MyGlass smartphone app, you can configure the Google+ sharing features on Glass: Which of your contacts you want ready access to, which groups you want to share videos and pictures to, and so on. For what it’s worth, Google+ actually does social networking better than Facebook in some ways, and sharing pics with groups and individuals is as easy as taking them.

On the other hand, social networking is both a Glass strength and its Achilles Heel: Everyone I saw while wearing Glass stared, then eventually asked me if I was recording them. Are we live right now? Is this online?

For the record, no, Glass is not violating your privacy. No, it is not surreptitiously recording you. No, it does not do face recognition. No, I am not seeing through your clothing.

While Google’s wild invention does raise those questions, the device is designed to skirt them all: To start recording a video or snap a shot, you need to actively turn it on. And there’s no red light on the front to indicate activity, but whoever you’re speaking with should be able to see the active screen.

And Google told me face recognition would require some processing power that’s simply out of the question, at least for now.

That said, what it does do is tantalize. Want directions? There they are. Want to share a picture of your trip? Done. Need a fact to wow a dinner party? There it is. 

Just don’t wear Glass during the dinner party. At least, that’s what my wife says.

Google has released the tech specs for its Google Glasses after shipping its first batch to developers today. So without further ado, here's what you need to know.

The glasses contain a five megapixel camera for photos but films in 720p.

They contain 12 GB of usable memory which is synced with Google cloud storage and contains 16 GB of flash memory in total.

The glasses are supported by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth but surprisingly not by 3G, which may be a drawback in the short term.

The glasses are compatible with any Bluetooth supported phone; the MyGlass companion app, however -- which enables GPS and SMS messaging -- requires Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to work.

The battery should last about a day during "typical use" however features like Google Hangouts and video recording will drain the battery more quickly.

The list of specs are missing one crucial thing: a price. Just imagine a number that is more than you can afford. You're probably not far off.

However, before you start saving up, you might still have some time on your hands before you can buy a pair of Google Glass. No official word as to their public availability as yet but if the speculation is correct, the specs are expected to be released to the public in about a year.

Google has also released the API (Application Programming Interface) for its glasses so anyone can start to develop apps that work in conjunction with Google Glasses.

Google will soon start handing out its high-tech new glasses -- but did they see the backlash coming?

Tuesday evening the tech giant said it was notifying 8,000 beta testers in the Glass Explorer program. They’ll each receive a pair of the augmented reality glasses, high-tech eyewear that can snap photos, text friends and record video of everything the wearer sees. Expect to see Google Glass soon on faces at the coffee shop and local baseball game.

Most tech pundits see it as an important innovation that could even rival the mighty smartphone. Thad Starner, a Georgia Tech professor and Google Project Glass adviser, said it could create a lifestyle change. He envisions widespread consumer adoption.

"I believe products like Project Glass will give us more power and make us efficient and calmer," he told FoxNews.com. "It will help us weed out interruptions."

But as the Glass roll-out begins, privacy experts and lawmakers have begun wondering whether it's a cause for concern as well. In West Virginia, a new law -- aimed squarely at Project Glass -- could make it illegal to drive with the glasses. A San Francisco bar forbade them on patrons. One activist group has even called for an outright ban.

Aaron Messing, a technology and information privacy attorney with Olender Feldman, says Google Glass could violate the "two-party consent" law in states like California, Washington and Nevada where it is illegal to record a conversation unless everyone agrees. He says more states might impose anti-HUD driving laws.

"Much of the concern centers around the ease of discreet recording, as well as concerns that such recording may become ubiquitous," he told FoxNews.com. "The proposed West Virginia law only seeks to regulate wearable heads-up displays [while driving]."

Arif Mahmood, a social media attorney in Toronto, says there are no federal laws governing the use of a device like Glass Explorer. He says the trend in society has moved from an obvious video camera recording, to a cell phone, and now to a personal heads-up display. Cities and states may not know how to respond.

"It's possible that nobody, even the wearer of Google Glass or a similar technology, will know when and what is being recording, and how it is being stored or transmitted," he said, adding the GPS location features could also create problems. We might know when the device is recording, but not when it is identifying someone in a crowd.

Starner disagreed, saying Project Glass actually encourages better privacy in public places. The founder of the wearable computing group at the MIT Media Lab decades ago, Starner has worn such devices for 20 years. He says the user is always in control of the device. There's a signal on the glasses that show when it is recording. And, unlike a smartphone in your pocket, you always know someone is wearing the device and using it.

There are laws that prevent people from misusing a device in public as well -- e.g., recording in a "reprehensible" way.

"People will always do reprehensible things with any new technology," he said. "The challenge is to encourage people to do things in a socially responsible way."

Mahmood says lawmakers probably won't react right away to Project Glass. If the glasses become pervasive in society, new laws may be enacted. That said, he wonders what will happen if the U.S. government decides to tap into them for surveillance.

"If the government has a warrant to track a Google Glass device it gets to see and hear everything the target sees (and where they go), but also what people around the target are saying and doing. This is different from cell phones where the point of a surveillance law would be only to listen in on the calls between the target and some third-party."

Other companies already offer wearable heads-up goggles. The Epson Moverio BT-100 Wearable Display costs $600, for example, and is powered by Android. The Motorola HC-1 is designed for industrial use in the field and can show pop-up maps.

Starner says journalists have used hidden cameras and audio recorders for decades. Smartphones can record audio when you have one stashed away in your pocket. He says, if someone is wearing Project Glass, there is an existing social contract that says you should always ask for permission before recording.

He says he is not aware of any feature in Project Glass that can identify someone in your field of view and record the GPS location. As far as wiretapping by the FBI goes, that would be difficult: Project Glass is designed to let everyone around you know when the device is recording.

“It’s a transparent display: What I see, you see,” he noted.

Jay Nancarrow, a Google spokesman, says the purpose of the Glass Explorer program is to find out more about the social factors for using the device in public.

"Glass isn’t the sort of technology you can develop in a conference room -- we really need people to take it out into the world and see what they’d like to do with it across a wide range of hobbies, lifestyles, and environments," he said.

Plans among the 8,000 participants in the project are widespread and intriguing. Sarah Hill would take hers to a VA hospital to let veterans see their war memorials. David Moriarty hopes to improve doctor-patient interaction for clinical trials. And Max Wood is a firefighter who would improve fire safety by using pre-fire planning maps.

Will the new heads-up glasses become pervasive? Judging from the response on Twitter, Project Glass is creating widespread interest. Whether everyone starts wearing them in public -- and whether your lawmaker starts mandating their use -- remains to be seen.
