Volvo completes tests of flywheel hybrid system

About two years ago we told you that Volvo was about to commence testing of an innovative flywheel-based kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), not in motorsport but in the realm of production cars.

The basic setup called for a flywheel KERS to be fitted to the free axle of a car.

When approaching a red light, the driver would hit the brakes like normal.This would cause the flywheel to spool up and keep spinning until the lights turn green and the driver hits the accelerator.

At this point, the flywheel's rotation is transferred to the rear wheels via a specially designed transmission, giving the car a little boost of energy off the line.

Volvo has announced that it has now completed extensive testing of the technology on public roads, using an S60 sedan as the test vehicle.

According to the automaker, the results show that the technology combined with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine has the potential to reduce fuel consumption by as much as 25 percent compared with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine--while offering comparable performance.

The energy stored in the flywheel is equivalent to an extra 80 horsepower. And when being transferred back to the wheels, swift torque build-up means rapid acceleration. The S60 test car would accelerate from 0-62 mph in about 5.5 seconds--remember, this is a turbocharged four-cylinder model we’re talking about.

Researchers found that the system works best in urban environments, which makes sense since the duration of the energy storage (the length of time the flywheel spins) is limited. In addition, researchers found that the stored energy was sufficient to power the car for short periods, meaning the engine could be switched off for as much as 50 percent of the time.

But the benefits don’t end there. Compared to a conventional gasoline-electric hybrid, Volvo’s flywheel KERS is lighter, cheaper and easier to maintain.

Now that the technology has proven successful in one of its existing models, Volvo will start tests in prototypes for its upcoming models and further evaluate the performance before potentially putting the technology into production.

Subaru introduces off-road hybrid

Subaru is coming out with a gas-electric hybrid crossover SUV for the crunchy granola crowd that wants to save fuel but still haul kayaks to the river.

The Japanese brand, which specializes in all-wheel-drive vehicles, unveils the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid on Thursday at the New York International Auto Show.

The company's first gas-electric hybrid gets somewhat better gas mileage than the conventional Crosstrek and has stop-start technology that shuts down the engine at red lights to save fuel. It has all-wheel-drive capability and the same 8.7-inch ground clearance so it can go on trails.

Test Drive: 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Subaru also will unveil a concept WRX high-horsepower compact car that strongly hints at what the next generation pocket-rocket will look like. The company says this WRX is lower, sleeker and wider with a bigger grille, while it keeps the classic hood scoop with clearance for a new turbocharged engine and air cooler. Subaru didn't say when the new WRX would hit showrooms or give further details.

Here are the highlights of the XV Crosstrek Hybrid:

UNDER THE HOOD: A 2-liter Boxer engine with 148 horsepower, plus a 13.4 horsepower electric motor and a continuously variable transmission that keeps the engine revving in an optimal range for gas mileage and power. The 13.5 kilowatt nickel-metal-hydride battery is under the rear floor, while the electric motor is under the hood just behind the transmission. The hybrid version weighs about 300 pounds more than the gas version. The electric motor starts the car under light acceleration and starts the gas engine once the car is moving. The car can run on electricity alone in low-speed situations.

OUTSIDE: The gas-electric model has hybrid badges on the front edges of the front doors and tailgate and different wheels and tail lamps. Also has a new green pearl exterior color exclusive to the hybrid. The front grille shutter system cuts wind drag at highway speeds.

INSIDE: Passenger cabin is slightly smaller (0.7 cubic feet), as is the cargo space of the hatchback. It's about 2 cubic feet less at just over 50 cubic feet. Hybrid instrument cluster with a blue color scheme, and blue-and-silver interior.

GAS MILEAGE: Subaru expects 28 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. That's three miles per gallon better in the city than the gas version with an automatic transmission, but only one mpg better on the highway.

PRICE: Will be announced closer to the car's arrival at dealerships in the fall of this year.

CHEERS: Subaru has come up with a hybrid system that can still handle the rigors of going off the road.

JEERS: The hybrid system will come with an added price, but it doesn't get that much better mileage than the gasoline version.

Test Drive: 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid

IT’S A TURBO!

It’s a hybrid.

Both are true, but Volkswagen would rather you keep the former in mind when you cross shop the 2013 Jetta Hybrid against other environmental do-gooders like the Toyota Prius.

The word “turbo” itself really isn’t important. Power is power, after all. But, even if it describes an increasingly common engine type these days, it still sounds cool to some people.

More to the point is the fact that the Jetta’s 1.4-liter internal combustion engine/electric motor combo develops 170hp, about 25 percent more than the Prius has.

Fuel efficiency is the trade-off, here. The Jetta Hybrid gets 45 mpg combined, the Prius 50 mpg.

But at what price that 5 mpg?

Volkswagen argues that it’s built a “real” car that offers superior performance, ride, handling and refinement compared to the Toyota and other efficiency-maximized hybrids. On those measures, it very well may have.

The engine in the VW may be small, but it’s smooth and well muffled, even with your foot to the floor. Instead of the droning you get from the CVT setups used by most hybrids, including the Prius, the Jetta uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) that performs lightning fast shifts and allows the engine to rise and fall with the throttle in a more conventional manner.

That is if it’s not working in pure electric drive, which VW says it can do up to 44 mph over short distances. I actually hit 50 mph on batteries once, possibly on a slight downhill. Even with a not particularly light foot calling the shots, the Jetta often ran as an EV around town, and the transitions between modes were as seamless as those of most other hybrids I have encountered.

As with many battery-powered cars, however, the brake pedal is little jumpy as the car switches between using the resistance of the electric motor to slow down while generating electricity, and the disc brakes for quick and full stops, but it’s easy to get acclimated.

Slightly more annoying is the occasionally jarring engagement of the transmission in stop and go driving. The DSG is essentially a manual with a robot working the clutch and, every once and a while, C-3PO pops it a little. But usually, it runs like it just got out of the oil bath in Luke's garage.

Appropriately, it’s on the highway where old “turbo” really comes into its own. Its power is on par with conventional compact cars, including the five-cylinder Jetta, and never feels pokey.

Under full acceleration, with the engine and electric motor running at max, and the needle on the power gauge pinned in the “boost” zone, it’s downright lively, with a slight electric motor whine chiming in to add some futurism to the soundtrack. But the ride is where this car truly excels.

Unlike the rest of the Jetta lineup, the Hybrid uses an independent rear suspension cribbed from the sporty GLI model. This is primarily to help with the packaging of its 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack -- which takes up relatively little trunk space and even leaves room for a spare tire under the floor -- but pays added benefits in the areas of comfort and handling.

The Jetta Hybrid glides over bumpy surfaces on well-damped springs, but also takes turns like a champ. Very neutral around curves, even when pushed, it puts on an impressive performance in the dynamics department, and the nicely-weighted, communicative steering doesn't feel like its attached to a video game console. This is a car that you can enjoy taking for a drive, not just a ride.

The icing is so sweet, in fact, that it’s easy to forget about the cake: fuel economy. That is the Jetta Hybrid’s primary mission, after all, so how does it do?

Although it fell short of its EPA rating in my real world testing, it hit a high of 42 mpg at an average of 42 mph on a loop that the larger 47 mpg-rated Ford Fusion Hybrid could hardly muster 40 mpg on at lower speeds.

Astute diesel fans may note that 42 mpg is the highway rating for a Jetta TDi fitted with an automatic transmission, which costs $850 less than the $25,790 hybrid. But the oil burner also has combined fuel economy of just 34 mpg.

Further complicating this internecine comparison, however, is that the Jetta Hybrid requires premium fuel, cutting into its price at the pump advantage over the diesel. Nevertheless, a typical driver should still save about $500 bucks a year filling it up.

But while VW is happy to offer its customers these alternatives, it’s surely more interested in stealing sales from the other guys, most notably that Prius, which starts at $24,995.

Against it, the Jetta definitely makes its “real” car case. It looks normal from the outside, has a spacious and straightforwardly-designed cabin, and if Fahrvergnügen is still a thing, exhibits plenty of that. What’s missing is the razzle dazzle.

Even in the fully-loaded, $31,975 example I spent a week with, a pretty run of the mill navigation system, backup camera and Bluetooth is about all of the technology on offer. Spend the same money on a Prius and, along with its “look at me saving the world” style, you can get things like radar cruise control, an automatic parking system and even a solar panel for the roof to match the one on your LEED certified home.

It’s all very neat stuff that also serves to distract you from the reality that the Prius is a boor to drive. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a hater. Most people could care less about that sort of thing, and the Prius offers a great package at an affordable price and is still the most fuel efficient car you can buy without a plug, which is why it single handedly outsold all of the Jetta sedans combined last year.

But this year, I’d pick the Jetta Hybrid. For keeping things interesting, it’s definitely worth the 5 mpg.

AMD demos new hybrid designs for 'Temash' platform

AMD is going all-in on the PC tablet and hybrid market, predicting that within a few years, notebooks with screens that pop off to become tablets will make up as much as 50 percent of the PC market. 

To power this next-generation of low-power Windows 8 devices, the company is releasing its next-generation of dual and quad-core mobile processors, codenamed "Temash" later this year. Here at Mobile World Congress 2013, we had a chance to see some really sleek new reference designs based on Temash running demanding tasks at full 1080p.

Temash is designed to compete directly with Intel's low-power Atom chips, which now appear in a slew of Windows 8 tablets and hybrids from the ASUS Vivotab Smart to the HP Envy X2 and ThinkPad Tablet 2. The current generation of Atom only supports a paltry 1,366 × 768 resolution and the systems we've tested with it haven't been capable of serious graphics work or gaming of any kind.

Users today who want strong performance from a Windows tablet must opt for expensive , heavy Core i5-powered systems with mediocre battery life like the $899 Microsoft Surface Pro or $1,199 Samsung ATIV Smart PC. According to AMD, Temash-based systems will provide 8 to 10 hours of web surfing and 6 hours of HD video on a charge while providing enough computing power to be your everyday primary PC at much lower cost. By the end of the year, AMD's Steve Belt predicted, we'll see Temash-powered Hybrids selling for $599 or less.The platform will also be used in standalone tablets and 11 to 13-inch ultraportable notebooks.

At the company's booth, AMD Product Marketing Manager Chris Sutphen showed us a series of compelling reference designs based on Temash and built by major ODMs such as Compal and Wistron, each running a different performance demo. The first system he showed us was a Compal reference design hybrid with a quad-core Temash chip that was meant to demonstrate Temash's multitasking proess running 1080p, an eReading app and an MP3 player all at the same time.

He then showed us an Inventec reference ablet that looked quite a bit like the Microsoft Surface, complete with a metal kickstand and a type cover with thin keys that offered a low level of travel. However, the color of the casing and the keyboard were completely different. The Inventec slate, which featured a dual-core Temash chip, was running productivity apps on its screen while outputting smooth 1080p video to a TV.

Stutphen then showed us one of his favorite designs, a Wistron NTA10 reference tablet with a keyboard cover that folds around the entire device, including its back to turn a soft case. We particularly liked the case/cover's rich yellow color, soft texture and responsive, soft-touch island-style keys. This is one of the few tablet keyboards we've seen that actually had a generously-sized touchpad and a real palmrest for supporting your wrists.

The Wistron NTA10, which ran on a quad-core Temash, was running a demo of the game Torchlight II, which Stuphen briefly played to show us how smooth the motion was. In a white box sitting next to the wistron was an unnmaed Atom Z2760 machine playing the same game by at slideshow like speeds. Of course, that system was running the demo in a loop and we were not able to see how it was configured to verify that it would perform this poorly in real life.

He also showed us a dual-core Temash-powered Quanta tablet that didn't have a particularly compelling design but was capable of running Windows 8 smoothly and playing back 1080p video.

One of AMD Temash's new features is Turbo Dock, which allows hybrid devices to offer better performance when attached to their keyboard docks. Because the keyboard docks provide better cooling, the CPU can boost its clockspeed to higher frequencies. To show Turbo Dock in action, Sutphen showed us the same Compal reference design hybrid running Internet Explorer's fishbowl demo, which fills a graphical fishbowl with as many fish as possible while trying to achieve a 60 fps frame rate. With the dock attached, the demo was able to show 120 fish at once, but once he detached the tablet that rate dropped to a still-strong 90 fish.

This 13-inch Compal prototype was our favorite design at the AMD booth, because of its sleek white design, large comfortable keyboard and mechanical docking system. After Sutphen swiped an unlock slider on-screen, the notebook made a pleasant whirring noise as it released the screen. When he put the screen back in, the mechanism moved its hooks back to hold the screen securely in place.

AMD Elite Experiences: Wireless Mirroring, Facial Recognition, Android Emulation|
AMD also provides a number of software packages that OEMs can bundle with Temash devices at no additional cost. Dubbed AMD Elite Experiences, these applications leverage the platform's hardware to provide some additional features to the user. Sutphen showed us a few of these Experiences. AMD Screen Mirror allows users to wirelessly stream video content to any other computer on the network via DLNA. AMD Face Login, which does what its name implies, quickly recognized his face and unlocked a demo computer for him. Using AMD Gesture Controls, he was able to swipe through a photo album and control a music player just by waving his hands in front of a notebook's webcam.

Finally, Sutphen showed us how an AMD-optimized version of the Bluestacks Android player for Windows. Using Bluestacks, he was able to open and run Android apps in a window on a Windows 8 tablet. He said that, in some cases, performance on these apps is better than on native Android devices.

Having the opportunity to run Android apps makes Windows 8 tablets that much more compelling because they can offer the best of both worlds. If one can get a 1080p Temash tablet for around the same price as a high-end Android tablet ($400 to $500), this ability could be a big selling point.
