Critics slam MSNBC host's claim that kids belong to community, not parents

Parents and media critics were aghast after a host for MSNBC called for collective care of a community's children instead of parents taking care of their kids themselves.

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry recorded a commercial for the network in which she stated that children do not belong to their parents, but are instead the responsibility of the members of their community.

“We have never invested as much in public education as we should have because we've always had kind of a private notion of children. Your kid is yours and totally your responsibility. We haven't had a very collective notion of these are our children,” she says in a spot for the network’s “Lean Forward” campaign. “So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents, or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to whole communities.”

Harris-Perry’s views ignited a firestorm of anger and disbelief.

“The notion that children belong to a state government rather than their own flesh and blood is the most disturbing statement made in recent political times. Melissa Harris-Perry is dead wrong. It’s unfathomable that any true American could make such a pretentious and naively ill statement,” media communications expert, and parent, Angie Olszewski told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “The government can’t properly run their own budgets schools and public systems. Why would anybody think they could rear children?”

The Media Research Center’s Director of Media Analysis, Tim Graham, called the MSNBC spot "frightening.”

“It's bad enough that ‘Lean Forward’ already sounds like an ad for Mao's Little Red Book, then to have your network's hosts talk about your children being part of the Collective is just spooky,” he said. “I think most parents disappoint MSNBC with their traditional beliefs that their children are theirs to love and raise as they feel is best. They don't want to surrender their parental rights to the ‘village.’ It's this same contempt for education beginning in the home that spurs many parents into home-schooling.”

Political pundit Glenn Beck condemned the clip during his radio show Monday, calling it an almost “parody of reality so far beyond what we have ever thought as a nation.” He also said there were plenty of people enamored by the MSNBC host’s theory, who would gladly “hand over” parenting responsibilities.

However, there are also those who argue that Harris-Perry’s comments are a step in the right direction when it comes to tackling the issue of improving education.

“I totally agree that ‘it takes a village.’ Although parents have the greatest influence on their children, society and its messages are powerful. It is up to us as educators and concerned community members to do what we can to make sure those messages are the ones we want our children to hear,” explained school administrator and founder of ParentingGirls.com, Dr. Janet R.Wojtalik. “Unfortunately not all of our families have the 'know how' or the resources to do what is best for their children. They need support.”

D.C.-based political lawyer Margaret Cone concurred, noting that her own family – like most at her own childhood school – actively participated in school activities.

“I was very close to the parents of my childhood friends. They watched out for me,” she continued. “It is society’s responsibility to ensure that the next generation is equipped to handle the ever-changing world. Educating our children is a responsibility that has been grossly ignored to our detriment.”

The clip has received almost half a million YouTube views since it was posted last week, and has drawn quite a mixed bag of responses.

“Excellent example of elitists who think they know how to raise your kids better than you,” commented one while another weighed in: “You nailed it.”

Republicans estimate immigration bill could cost taxpayers billions, Rubio challenges claim

Senate Republicans estimated Thursday that the annual cost to taxpayers of legalizing illegal immigrants could be in the billions, if they use their status to apply for federal benefits from Medicaid and ObamaCare.

Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee -- responding to a draft immigration bill that includes a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants -- estimated that the cost could total up to $40 billion in 2022, "just for Medicaid and ObamaCare."

"The net costs would be enormous and only increase once citizenship is granted," the office of Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, top Republican on the committee, said in a statement Thursday.

Payments from Medicaid and subsidies from the federal health care law represent just a fraction of federal government benefits that a green-card holder or U.S. citizen can apply for.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a key member of the "Gang of Eight" which is drafting a proposal, has stressed that he would ensure there are limits on benefits being applied to these individuals. He told Fox News in January that the first phase for them would be to get a nonimmigrant visa -- not a green card -- "and you don't qualify for any federal benefits under that. You don't get federal benefits."

Their eligibility, though, would change once they get a green card.

Sessions' office voiced concern Thursday that a century-old law meant to prevent immigrants from taking root in the U.S. only to live on the government dole would not be applied here.

That law is supposed to turn away those immigrants who are likely to become a "public charge." But the statement Thursday claimed nothing in the current plan would apply to those already in the country before they are granted legal status.

Further, numbers recently provided by the Department of Homeland Security indicated the "public charge" standard is not aggressively enforced. The department found just one case for most of fiscal 2012 where the claim was leveled at an immigrant. "However, the charge was later withdrawn," DHS reported.

The department blamed "data entry quality" for not having complete information on how many immigrants became public charges.

Despite widespread reports and speculation about the immigration bill being drafted, a bill has not yet been introduced. Senators are working out the details in hopes of bringing it before Congress in the coming weeks.

Secret Service probing claim new director's information was hacked

The Secret Service confirmed Thursday that it is investigating whether personal information on newly appointed agency Director Julia Pierson had been hacked.

The Service told Fox News it is investigating the claim, after a website posted a list of details -- including a Social Security Number and credit report -- purportedly belonging to Pierson.

The site has previously posted information on a string of other high-profile figures including first lady Michelle Obama.

The Secret Service would provide no further comment.

The target in this case, Pierson, was sworn in as the first female director of the Secret Service during a March 27 ceremony.

In addition to a Social Security Number and credit report, the website posted a list of phone numbers and addresses supposedly belonging to the new director.

TSA dismisses GOP lawmaker's claim disabled Marine humiliated at Arizona airport

A GOP lawmakers claims TSA agents humiliated a marine at Sky Harbor Airport.myfoxphoenix.com

A California lawmaker is slamming the TSA after he says they humiliated a Marine who lost his legs to an explosive device, but the agency says security footage proves the claims are false.

MyFoxPhoenix.com reports Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., says in a letter to the TSA that the security screening the unnamed Marine was forced to undergo at Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport was excessive.

Hunter claims the Marine was traveling to a spring training game when he underwent the security screening. The Marine, who lost his legs in an IED explosion but is still on active duty, was reportedly forced to remove his prosthetic legs and stand so agents could check his wheelchair for explosives.

Hunters says the Marine was told he must walk to a different screening area, despite being physically unable to do so.

"While I recognize the necessity to appropriately screen passengers, I am concerned by the apparent lack of situational awareness and respect among TSA officers... specifically when it comes to the treatment of war wounded," Hunter said according to MyFoxPhoenix.com.

However, the TSA said in a statement Hunter's version of the events is false.

"No prosthetic was removed," a spokesperson tells MyFoxPhoenix.com after reviewing video footage from the airport. "Screening was complete in less than 8 minutes and carried out by two military veterans."

The spokesperson says they are also working to make the screening process smoother for wounded veterans.
