Documentary 'Aroused' explores what makes women turn to porn careers

Ever wonder what makes young, pretty, "good" girls pursue careers in porn?

So did Deborah Anderson, that's why she made a documentary and fine-art photography book on the subject. "Aroused" opens in select theaters Thursday and is available for download on iTunes. The book is available on Amazon.

Many of the 16 adult-film actresses featured in "Aroused" attended the film's premiere Wednesday night at the Landmark Theatre and hung around afterward to autograph the coffee-table book.

Anderson was inspired to explore these women's stories after casting a porn star in a photo shoot for a magazine. She was struck by the woman's warm personality and her stories of harsh treatment from the public despite contributing to a widely consumed product of a billion-dollar industry.

Porn stars are not failed actresses. They enjoy their work and see off-duty sex as having nothing to do with their day jobs. All have had sexually-transmitted diseases. Most shared concern for how others view their profession and worried whether it could impede future job or romantic prospects.

Anderson said she hopes the book and film will spotlight the humanity of these women and the sensuality of their work.

F-35 Lighting II, the future jet, will give the U.S. the capability to fly into enemy space first and attack a target with precision weapons at long ranges to clear the way for further forces -- without ever being detected.

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II is a 5th-generation stealth fighter developed to safely penetrate areas without enemy radar seeing them -- an enhanced degree of “invisibility” that the 4th generation cannot achieve. Last Friday, the U.S. Marine Corps' VMFAT-501 training squadron in Florida’s Eglin AFB launched its first F-35B eight-ship, flew a mission, hot-pit refueled and went back up again.

This mission is the latest in a series of promising steps forward for the F-35.

Last month, the stealth fighter also had its landmark first short takeoff and vertical landing during a night mission. The test provided further data on the fighter’s special helmet and lighting in operations at night.

Since the program kicked off in the early 1990s, the F-35 development has been bombarded with criticism varying from targeting as the Pentagon’s most expensive equipment through to concerns voiced in a Pentagon Operational Test and Evaluation Office that the fighter could not fly near thunderstorms or risk the jet’s fuel tank exploding.

What is 5th-generation stealth?
The F-35's highly advanced stealth, called “Very Low Observable” or VLO stealth, is achieved through many advances that combine to dramatically reduce detection by enemy aircraft and defense systems.

  • The 5th-generation has what is called a “lower radar cross-section.” Essentially, it means an F-35 pilot can be virtually invisible to enemy aircraft and gives the pilot the advantage of “seeing” the other aircraft first and taking action.
  • The aircraft is fabricated from very advanced materials with a special coating to assist fighter that can move through enemy space essentially invisible to radar.
  • The shape is designed without specific angles, for example, to reduce radar wave reflection. Innovations like reduced heat emissions and embedded antennas further enhance its stealth.

Typical weapons are mounted externally, on wings for example, but the Lightning II can carry a wide weapon array including satellite-guided bombs internally.

In addition to stealth and radar transparency, the F-35 is expected to be faster with a far greater range than previous aircraft with max mach at about 1.6. It has a top speed of 1,300 mph and a range of 1,450 miles.

Its advanced electronic warfare capabilities mean it can locate and track enemy forces, jam radio frequencies and disrupt attacks – key because it means an F-35 can reach highly defended targets while suppressing enemy radar detection.

In addition to electronic warfare and air to air or to ground attack, the F-35 could be used for invisible surveillance and reconnaissance and share the information with forces at sea and on the ground.

The pilots’ helmets are also designed to be state of the art giving the pilots an almost virtual reality. They are laser-scanned to fit precisely to each pilot’s head and while it displays all the data inside the visor that the pilot needs, it also allows them to see 360 degrees.

Inside the cockpit, there are other advanced capabilities like speech recognition – so that a pilot can talk to an F-35 and it talks back.  It also has a glass screen digital instrument panel that the pilot can touch to pull up data – sort of like operating a smart phone.

Three types of Lightning II Force
The Department of Defense's Joint Strike Fighter Program funded the F-35 program with the intention of creating an affordable next generation strike aircraft weapon systems for the Navy, Air Force and Marines. It is hoped the 5th generation stealth fighter will replace several frontline aircraft.

Currently, there are three variations of the stealthy agile F-35 that could be used to defend the homeland and dominate enemy skies.

All three are supersonic, use Very Low Observable stealth and cover the spectrum of take-off needs including challenging take-off scenarios like short paved runways and aircraft carriers through to remote rudimentary roads and forward operating bases.

The F-35A Conventional Takeoff and Landing (CTOL) version carries an internal cannon and is meant for conventional runways.

The F-35B variant, designed for use by the U.S. Marine Corps, as well as the United Kingdom and Italy, has short takeoff/vertical landing (SVTOL).

A very important capability, SVTOL allows it to undertake missions from small ships, ski-jump aircraft carriers or very rudimentary expeditionary airfields near front-line combat zones.

Very cool, the F-35B can land all by itself and hover at the touch of a button.

The third version, the larger winged F-35C carrier, is designed for ultra precise handling for final ship approach. For managing the stress of catapult launches and arrested recoveries, it has a more robust structure.

Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems and Pratt & Whitney also work with Lockheed Martin on the project.

Truly a national undertaking, forty-six states and Puerto Rico involved in the F-35 program with Texas, Georgia, California, Arizona and Florida in particular supporting essential testing.

Cornyn says Obama budget makes only 'modest progress' toward entitlement reform

A top Senate Republican expressed only guarded optimism Sunday about a potential grand bargain with Democrats based on the budget President Obama submitted that includes entitlement reform but additional tax increases.  

“I give the president credit that he did put (a budget) on the table,” Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn told “Fox News Sunday."

The Texas senator, in charge of wrangling Republican votes in the Democrat-controlled chamber, called Obama’s plan to chain Social Security increased to the Consumer Price Index only “modest progress” toward entitlement reform.

However, the president’s 2014 budget also suggests raising taxes another trillion dollars and is not balanced, he said.

His comments are similar to those made last week by House Speaker John Boehner after Obama released the budget.

The Ohio Republican said Obama wants to hold hostage “modest reforms” for another round of tax increases, referring to increases his party agreed to in December 2012 as part of a deal with Democrats to keep the country from going off the so-called fiscal cliff.

Later on Fox, Sen. Dick Durbin, who counts votes for Democrats in the chamber, said Boehner simply dismissed the plan because the word “tax” was included.

He said Republicans “have to put everything on the table” if they are indeed serious about dealing with the budget deficit.

“For goodness sakes,” Durbin said, acknowledging he has supported the chained CPI concept and that it could be part of the Social Security reform plan if it gives the program long-term solvency.

Sweet chariot: Arizona man's love for paralyzed wife makes him king of custom wheelchairs

When an auto accident left Liz Soden paralyzed, she told her then-fiance to leave her. He proposed instead, and then disappeared into the garage and began a lifelong quest to build a better wheelchair.

Actually, calling the creations Brad Soden turns out of his Arizona garage "wheelchairs" doesn't do them justice. There's the Tank Chair, with half-track treads that allow it to move through sand or ice. Another chair can carry Liz Soden at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour and still another has a .50-caliber gun mounted on it. Those vehicles are a long way from the prototype Soden made - a modified golf cart - so his wife could zoom down the aisle and then mingle with guests at their wedding in March, 2000.

“Most of the time, when you are in a wheelchair, you are put someplace and people have to come to you," Liz Soden said. "But with the golf cart, I was able to move around and see everyone. I wasn’t stuck in one place.”

The golf cart was only the beginning for Brad Soden, a volunteer firefighter who was unhurt in the accident that nearly cost Liz her mobility, but didn't.

“We ended up walking away from it, but she ended up paralyzed,” he said, referring to the three sons from a prior relationship who were in the car. “Between the two of us, we have five kids. We are a very active family. We go camping a lot. After she got hurt, we tried with the wheelchair and to keep everything as normal as we could.”

Since their marriage, it seems every time Liz runs into a barrier, Brad heads for the garage and starts tinkering. On a family camping trip in 2005, he realized that the golf cart wasn't enough.

“We were out there one day and a herd of elk came through the campgrounds," Brad Soden recalled. "We tried to get her in the chair and get her out with the kids, and the chair kept getting stuck. She was crying, saying, 'Just go on without me,' and I just found that unacceptable. So I told her I would build her something."

Without any background in engineering or physics, Brad set out to design a better wheelchair for Liz. One that would provide no limits.

"I did not [have any experience]. What I did was, with my concept, I went around to a lot of people and the first thing they asked me is if I was an electrical engineer,” Soden recalled.

“I'm just a dumb ol' hillbilly, but I wasn't going to take no for answer so when a lot of people turned me down...it didn't stop me. I just kept working at it."

Soden began devouring books on electrical engineering, and he began tinkering.

"I made my first Tank Chair in 2007," Soden said. "And I basically pushed the limits on what you can do with electricity. Started a lot of fires, met a lot of resistance. But from what I learned, with the applied science, we've done some pretty cool things."

The original Tank Chair, an off-road wheelchair that easily goes over any terrain—from snow to mud—featured rubber tank treads stretched over wheels and two high-torque electric motors. Later that year, the family visited the Grand Canyon, and Brad took Liz to the North Rim for her first "hike" since the accident.

"She just had this big, million- jumbo-watt smile," he recalled. "She got to go on a hike with her two little girls side by side. She got to go by herself. It was freedom that she had not had since the accident. I got to sit at the camp with the boys and I could watch go off, and she got to enjoy herself."

Liz said the trip showed her that she never had to be immobilized, as long as she had Brad for a husband.

"The freedom was just…awesome," she said. "It was like I was handed my legs back again.

“[Prior to the accident,] we were always camping and being outside and being a mom with five kids, I would set up the camp," she said. "After the accident, I got put next to the fire and everyone else went off and did everything. I tried so hard not to cry. The kids wanted to go on hike and I couldn’t go with them.”

Still, the Tank Chair had some limitations—mainly that she couldn’t use in indoors. So Brad then set out to build a tricked-out electric wheelchair. His Speedster is outfitted with motorcycle tires and can top out at 30 miles per hour. Its battery can hold a 10-day charge.

When their home was vandalized, Brad made sure his wife never had to feel helpless.

“We called the police and the dispatcher asked if anyone got hurt. I said no and she gave me a number to call to file an incident report," Brad recalled. “"I said, 'Here's a thought, how about you send a police officer out and I dunno, dust for prints? At least try to look for somebody.' She said, 'Sorry, we don't have the manpower for that.'”

“I thought that was wrong. So I said I would handle it myself. I spent a whole weekend in the garage, took a .50-caliber [Browning machine gun] and put it on a Tank Chair chassis.

“I unloaded [the gun] and had my 7-year-old son with cameras from inside the house to operate it and I was sitting in my front yard with my hat on and my beer. Then I moved and my son moved the chair and mirrored me. The whole precinct showed up on our block. Cop cars filled the entire cul-de-sac.”

These days, whenever Liz is out and about in one of her custom chairs, people stop and ask questions as to where they could get one. That led the couple to start the Liz Soden Foundation in 2011, to provide Tank Chairs or Speedsters to needy paralyzed folks, as well as police officers, firefighters and soldiers injured in the line of duty. It cost's an average of $7500 to produce each chair.

Bill Weigt, an investigator for the Peoria, Ariz., police department, who was paralyzed after being shot in the chest while chasing a murder suspect in 2005 got a one-of-a-kind “Cop Chair” which was outfitted with lights, a siren, and iPad interface.

"It's amazing. Words can't even describe it," Weigt said to local media at the time. "It still blows me away that it's been so long and people still want to do nice things, which is amazing."

Another recipient, from the Sodens' hometown of Parker, Jessie Schifo, 29, received his chair three months ago after being paralyzed for 11 years.

“I’ve wanted one ever since Brad told me he was building them," he said. "Before I even saw a sketch.

"It gives me the ability to things I haven’t been able to do for a long time,” he also said, adding that he recently rode the Tank Chair through four feet of snow at a ski resort near Flagstaff, Ariz., and was able to attend an off-road race in the Las Vegas desert.

“It gives you a warm feeling to be able to have the freedom to do all things you want again,” he said.

Dark matter, hidden substance that makes up the universe, possibly found by $2b space physics experiment

NASA will unveil the first discoveries from a powerful $2 billion particle physics experiment on the International Space Station in what could be a major vindication for the science tool, which almost never made it into space.

The space agency will hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT) today, April 3, to reveal the first science results from the experiment, called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. You can watch the AMS science results live on FoxNews.com.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer is an advanced cosmic-ray detector designed to seek out signs of antimatter and elusive dark matter from its perch on the backbone-like main truss of the International Space Station. More than 200 scientists representing 16 countries and 56 institutions are part of the science team, which is led by Nobel laureate Samuel Ting, a physicist at MIT.

"AMS is a state-of-the-art cosmic ray particle physics detector located on the exterior of the International Space Station," NASA officials said in an announcement Tuesday. [See photos of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in space]

'It will not be a minor paper.'

NASA and the AMS team have not revealed exactly what the first science results from AMS will be, but Ting has assured that it will be a significant announcement.

"It will not be a minor paper," Ting said on Feb. 17 during the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston, adding that it would represent a "small step" toward understanding the true nature of dark matter, even if it is not the final answer.

The spectrometer consists of a huge, 3-foot wide magnet that bends the paths of cosmic particles and steers them into special detectors designed to measure particles' charge, energy and other properties. The complicated space experiment was 16 years in the making, but despite its lofty mission, the 7-ton AMS almost never flew.

In fact, NASA canceled the space shuttle mission originally slated to launch AMS to the space station in 2005. At the time, the space agency cited safety concerns following the 2003 space shuttle Columbia accident – an event that led directly to the space shuttle fleet's retirement in 2011.

But NASA's decision to cancel the AMS mission did not sit well with the science community. Scientists launched a persistent campaign to resurrect the AMS launch, including an intense lobbying effort to sway lawmakers in Congress to their side.

The fight back was a success. Congress approved funding for an extra space shuttle mission that would launch the AMS experiment to the space station. That mission, NASA's STS-134 flight aboard Endeavour, launched into space in May 2011.

"I never had any doubt when they were going to fly. I think it was three days after the inauguration of President Obama, we were on the manifest," Ting told SPACE.com in 2011, just before the experiment arrived at the station. "We didn't change the mission, we just continued."

During the fight to revive the AMS experiment, NASA and its International Space Station partners also approved a plan to extend the orbiting laboratory's operations in space through 2020. That decision prompted Ting and his science team to make a last-minute change to the AMS instrument. The team swapped out the spectrometer's original magnet, which would last only a few years, for a longer-lasting permanent magnet to allow for longer science observations.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer was first attached to the International Space Station on May 16, 2011. Three days later, the instrument was activated for the first time and has been performing science observations ever since. The instrument is managed by NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, which is home to the space station's Mission Control.

Anti-abortion law makes Arkansas ground zero in intensifying national debate

Arkansas has become ground zero in the battle over abortion rights and limitations in the country.

Just last week, lawmakers overrode Gov. Mike Beebe's veto of a law that will ban most abortions after the 12th week of pregnancy. Under the Arkansas Human Heartbeat Protection Act, which is scheduled to go into effect later this summer, women seeking an abortion who are at least 12 weeks pregnant will be required to undergo an ultrasound. If a heartbeat is detected, the abortion would not be permitted. 

The law includes jail time and fines for doctors who violate the law but no penalties for women who seek or undergo an illegal abortion.

State Sen. Jason Rapert, the Republican who authored the law, says he thinks lawmakers struck the right balance. He notes the measure includes exceptions for "rape, incest, to save the life of the mother and to prevent irreparable harm to the mother's health, in addition to giving an exception for fatal fetal anomalies."

In deciding to veto the legislation, Beebe cited concerns over the constitutionality of the law, as well as the cost of defending it. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, notes that Arkansas is not alone on that front.

"There are so many battles in so many states that are very similar that I think the bulk of the law will, without question, make itself up to the [Supreme] Court," Dannenfelser said.

Pro-choice groups, citing Roe v. Wade and subsequent Supreme Court precedents, feel confident it's a fight they will win.

"The bill is clearly unconstitutional, clearly inconsistent with Supreme Court precedent," Louise Melling, the American Civil Liberties Union's deputy legal director, said. ACLU officials said they are planning to jointly file a legal challenge with the Center for Reproductive Rights before the Arkansas law is set to go into effect.

While the so-called "Heartbeat Law" is hashed out in court, Rapert also says he plans to introduce a measure that would ban state officials from allowing any state or federal funds from flowing to organizations that perform abortions, namely Planned Parenthood. 

If he succeeds, Arkansas would join a number of other states that have blocked funding to the family planning organization, including Colorado, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin.
