F-35 Lighting II, the future jet, will give the U.S. the capability to fly into enemy space first and attack a target with precision weapons at long ranges to clear the way for further forces -- without ever being detected.

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II is a 5th-generation stealth fighter developed to safely penetrate areas without enemy radar seeing them -- an enhanced degree of “invisibility” that the 4th generation cannot achieve. Last Friday, the U.S. Marine Corps' VMFAT-501 training squadron in Florida’s Eglin AFB launched its first F-35B eight-ship, flew a mission, hot-pit refueled and went back up again.

This mission is the latest in a series of promising steps forward for the F-35.

Last month, the stealth fighter also had its landmark first short takeoff and vertical landing during a night mission. The test provided further data on the fighter’s special helmet and lighting in operations at night.

Since the program kicked off in the early 1990s, the F-35 development has been bombarded with criticism varying from targeting as the Pentagon’s most expensive equipment through to concerns voiced in a Pentagon Operational Test and Evaluation Office that the fighter could not fly near thunderstorms or risk the jet’s fuel tank exploding.

What is 5th-generation stealth?
The F-35's highly advanced stealth, called “Very Low Observable” or VLO stealth, is achieved through many advances that combine to dramatically reduce detection by enemy aircraft and defense systems.

  • The 5th-generation has what is called a “lower radar cross-section.” Essentially, it means an F-35 pilot can be virtually invisible to enemy aircraft and gives the pilot the advantage of “seeing” the other aircraft first and taking action.
  • The aircraft is fabricated from very advanced materials with a special coating to assist fighter that can move through enemy space essentially invisible to radar.
  • The shape is designed without specific angles, for example, to reduce radar wave reflection. Innovations like reduced heat emissions and embedded antennas further enhance its stealth.

Typical weapons are mounted externally, on wings for example, but the Lightning II can carry a wide weapon array including satellite-guided bombs internally.

In addition to stealth and radar transparency, the F-35 is expected to be faster with a far greater range than previous aircraft with max mach at about 1.6. It has a top speed of 1,300 mph and a range of 1,450 miles.

Its advanced electronic warfare capabilities mean it can locate and track enemy forces, jam radio frequencies and disrupt attacks – key because it means an F-35 can reach highly defended targets while suppressing enemy radar detection.

In addition to electronic warfare and air to air or to ground attack, the F-35 could be used for invisible surveillance and reconnaissance and share the information with forces at sea and on the ground.

The pilots’ helmets are also designed to be state of the art giving the pilots an almost virtual reality. They are laser-scanned to fit precisely to each pilot’s head and while it displays all the data inside the visor that the pilot needs, it also allows them to see 360 degrees.

Inside the cockpit, there are other advanced capabilities like speech recognition – so that a pilot can talk to an F-35 and it talks back.  It also has a glass screen digital instrument panel that the pilot can touch to pull up data – sort of like operating a smart phone.

Three types of Lightning II Force
The Department of Defense's Joint Strike Fighter Program funded the F-35 program with the intention of creating an affordable next generation strike aircraft weapon systems for the Navy, Air Force and Marines. It is hoped the 5th generation stealth fighter will replace several frontline aircraft.

Currently, there are three variations of the stealthy agile F-35 that could be used to defend the homeland and dominate enemy skies.

All three are supersonic, use Very Low Observable stealth and cover the spectrum of take-off needs including challenging take-off scenarios like short paved runways and aircraft carriers through to remote rudimentary roads and forward operating bases.

The F-35A Conventional Takeoff and Landing (CTOL) version carries an internal cannon and is meant for conventional runways.

The F-35B variant, designed for use by the U.S. Marine Corps, as well as the United Kingdom and Italy, has short takeoff/vertical landing (SVTOL).

A very important capability, SVTOL allows it to undertake missions from small ships, ski-jump aircraft carriers or very rudimentary expeditionary airfields near front-line combat zones.

Very cool, the F-35B can land all by itself and hover at the touch of a button.

The third version, the larger winged F-35C carrier, is designed for ultra precise handling for final ship approach. For managing the stress of catapult launches and arrested recoveries, it has a more robust structure.

Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems and Pratt & Whitney also work with Lockheed Martin on the project.

Truly a national undertaking, forty-six states and Puerto Rico involved in the F-35 program with Texas, Georgia, California, Arizona and Florida in particular supporting essential testing.

Get the strike fighter experience in Latin America at the LAAD 2013 defense show

Want to know what it feels like to fly a U.S. strike fighter in aerial combat? Then Rio de Janeiro is the place for you -- well, it was, anyway.

With the U.S. military suffering under sequestration, American defense giants and their fellows from around the world converged on Rio de Janeiro to win business from the ever-growing Latin American military budgets at the biannual LAAD 2013 defense show, which ran April 9 - 12.

Want to fly a U.S. strike fighter?
Boeing played it very smart and made the Super Hornet experience available to potential buyers and mere attendees of the show. A finalist in Brazil’s F-X2 fighter competition, the Super Hornet is in service with the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force.

While Boeing also brought unmanned systems, it was the company’s Super Hornet simulator that demonstrated both single-seat E and two-seat F model capabilities that made a big splash.

Potential buyers could jump in and hone their takeoff and landing skills not just on a runway, but also an aircraft carrier.

The simulator included a front and rear cockpit where you could even have a go at air-to-ground targeting and aerial combat.

Robots
Robots are always crowd-pleasers, and Northrop Grumman featured robots big and small at the show.

On the larger side, Northrop also brought the mid-sized vehicle CaMeL, short for Carry-all Mechanized Equipment Landrover, essentially an unmanned ground vehicle.

Capable of carrying 1,000 pound of equipment, CaMeL is used for a range of tasks from lightening a dismounted soldier’s load to mine clearing and casualty evacuations.

This clever CaMeL can also be used as a retransmission platform, a robotic weapon system or for ammo, food and water resupply.

It runs on both a battery and diesel and can travel at speeds of 5 mph over varied terrain. Power efficient, this robot can provide about 20 hours of continuous operations on 3.5 gallons of fuel.

On the other hand, the tiny, 23-inch high Titus -- one of the company’s new unmanned ground vehicles -- can be controlled with a something similar to a gaming console. Particularly handy for those hard to reach places, it can navigate narrow 16-inch pathways and move at a speed of 7.5 mph.

Location, location, location
Impossible to miss smack dab in the entry to the most bustling hall, BAE Systems secured prime real estate at LAAD 2013. It was one of the more convivial stands, which is hardly surprising given BAE’s ongoing wins with Brazilian armed forces.

Successes like the armored personnel carrier M113, acquired by the Brazilian Army, were prominently featured. Designed for rough terrain, high-speeds on roads and even amphibious operations, the M113 can carry thirteen including the driver.

A popular combat vehicle, there are more than 80,000 internationally with more than 44 countries.

Wolves, Hurricanes and more
A wide range of Israeli companies performed very well at LAAD, but it was Hatehof’s massive vehicles that were spotlight stealers.

Hatehof recently won domestic contracts with the Israeli police and Ministry of the Interior and featured a suite including the Wolf, Navigator and Hurricane.

Wolf was developed for the Israel Defense Forces for use in urban and challenging terrain missions. The 9 ton, armored four-by-four can carry up to nine soldiers.

The Navigator, a massive MRAP, weighs about 18.5 tons and carries up to 13 soldiers. It has a high level of protection of up to 14 kg for underbelly mines.

Navigator is designed to defend soldiers from IEDs and RPGs.  It has STANAG Level 3 protection and can be upgraded to Level 4.

On the lighter side at 9 tons, Hurricane is a more lightly armoured, lighter in weight vehicle with more maneuverability.

It can carry up to seven soldiers and also has a STANAG protection Level 3 with the potential to increase to Level 4.

Hatehof's Riot Control Vehicles have a pick and mix of configurations and add-ons including armored cabins, jamming systems and day and night cameras.

With these vehicles designed to defeat riots, a customer can also choose from an array of non-lethals such as water, dye, skunk, gas and foam.

Sky Nets and Battlefield Tactical Radar
Thales is dominating in Latin America sky nets - with 140 operational radars, 250 Navaids and 26 TopSky-ATC deployed in air traffic control and surveillance – they already cover more than half of the airspace.

France-based Thales has been building relationships with Latin America for more than four decades.

Focusing on combining radar and non-radar tech to optimize surveillance coverage, state of the art tech to improve safety was showcased including TopSky-Safety Nets for airspace and TopSky-Tower for the ground.

The joint-venture between Raytheon and Thales, ThalesRaytheonSystems, did a Latin reveal on their air defense tech the Ground Master 400.

The mobile long-range air defense 3-D radar with adaptable towers detects the full range of very high to very low altitudes. It is designed to track tough targets like drones, cruise missiles and aircraft flying at only several hundred feet above ground.  

With more than 600 systems in service internationally, the company says it is the world leader in battlefield tactical radars.

New to the party
Turkey and UAE are two recent additions to the largest defense exhibition in Latin America. This year UAE presence grew bringing fifteen companies at this year’s national pavilion including Tawazun, Sofia Trading, Emirates Advanced Investments Group and Advanced Integrated System.

Turkey brought ten defense companies across the spectrum from shipbuilding through to ammunition.

And then there was Pakistan
Pakistan made its debut this year at LAAD.

The largest state-owned defense conglomerate, Global Industrial & Defence Solutions, brought a range of unmanned aerial vehicles or “drones.” Remote controlled or self-controlled, these drones are designed for surveillance monitoring and other purposes.

They also featured their ANZA-MK II surface to air missiles, Baktar Shikan anti-tank guided missiles.

Mixed Martial Arts fighter Fallon Fox shouldn't be allowed to beat up women

Let me paint you a picture: your daughter is playing a contact sport. Say, football or hockey. She's gone from being your little girl to becoming a beautiful young woman. Opposite her on the field (or ice), is somebody who once was a man, until he decided that he didn’t feel like being one anymore.

This person can now legally, physically attack your daughter.

This makes liberals rejoice. How progressive.

Enter Fallon Fox, a male-to-female transgendered person, who has now decided to make a living by beating up women. With a record of 2-0, none of Fallon’s female victims have even made it past two minutes of the first round.  If you were to watch these fights, it would look very much like you would expect…a man knocking a woman unconscious.

In the name of political correctness, leftists have come out championing the cause, as Fallon ragdolls female opponents into oblivion.

I can just hear the critics now... “She’s a she!” “You just hate transgender people!” or of my personal favorite “your values are just archaic!”

Archaic values? Possibly. Here’s one to try on for size…

Unless you were born and raised a woman, you don’t go around hitting chicks.

It’s only natural for human beings to get squeamish at the sight of a lifelong male pummeling dames mercilessly, but it’s not an argument. So let’s use a scientific one! Surprisingly, human biology is not the homophobic, intrinsically anti-transgender medium that leftists would have you believe.

So let’s assume for a second that one can completely change their genetics (rather than the likely reality of having merely pushed certain, inconvenient gene expressions at bay) after having Bobbitt’d their wiener. It is still undeniable that for this person’s entire life, that he had the hormonal profile and capabilities of a man. This is of course to say nothing of the ligaments, bone density and overall musculature that has been built over a lifetime of… well, being a man. Let’s just talk hormones for a second.

Healthy young men naturally have an approximate testosterone level of 450-1100 ng./dl. Women, typically have that of 40-70 ng./dl. That’s a ratio of at least 10:1.

To give you some context; the dumb, roided out, oompa-loompa orange, professional bodybuilder at your neighborhood curl-rack very seldom enjoy that kind of a testosterone gap over their own male counterparts (with average pro bodybuilders coming in somewhere around 3500 ng.dl)  

Even when people discontinue their stupid steroid cycles, they keep a significant portion of the gains they’ve made. (Also, their tribal tattoos. Gotta keep it real bro!)

Let me ask you this; if Barry Bonds came out and said “Okay okay, I did copious amounts of steroids for over 20 years, but I stopped before I hit my last few homers,” would you consider that fair? Would you consider it a distinctly illegal advantage or merely put one on the ledger for ol’ Bondy-boy! Chalk it up to him and his shenanigans, that’s our Barry!

Then there’s Lance Armstrong. Do people cut him a lot of slack for doping?

Finally, let me present to you exhibit C: Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. Once the definitive Strikeforce female featherweight champion, Cristiane found herself stripped of the title and suspended from fighting. The reason? You guessed it, anabolic steroids. See the reason for this is that often, hard as it is to believe, anabolic steroids assist drastically in improving one’s performance!

On a related note, Fallon Fox has being using steroids for decades.

They’re called testicles.

If you’ve had them, grown up with them and used them... you don't get to beat up women.
