The CEO of BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion will deliver a keynote speech amid speculation that he'll introduce a lower-priced version of the BlackBerry at the company's annual three-day conference in Orlando, Fla.

CEO Thorsten Heins is set to speak Tuesday morning.  RIM unveiled new, versatile BlackBerrys earlier this year after delays allowed Apple and others to dominate the smartphone market.

The BlackBerry, pioneered in 1999, had been the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people and consumers before the iPhone debuted in 2007 and showed that phones can handle much more than email and calls. RIM faced numerous delays modernizing its operating system. During that time, it had to cut more than 5,000 jobs and saw shareholder wealth decline by more than $70 billion.

Terrafugia unveils next-generation flying car

It’s a flying car!

At least more than the last one was.

Terrafugia, creators of the Transition street-legal airplane, have unveiled their vision for the next generation of personal aircraft, the TF-X.

The TF-X is closer to being a direct replacement for the automobile than the Transition, which features retractable wings that allow it to be driven on public roads and is primarily intended for use as a conventional aircraft that takes off and lands from an airport runway.

It’s also a hybrid, in more ways than one.

Although it flies like a fixed-wing aircraft, the four-seat TF-X was designed to take off and land vertically with the help of collapsible, electrically-powered rotors mounted on the ends of its fold-up wings. They draw their energy from a battery pack of yet-to-be-determined size and chemistry that can either be charged via an electrical outlet, or by the gas turbine engine that powers a rear-mounted propeller when the TF-X is in flight.

On the ground, the TF-X is propelled by electric motors in the wheels that are also run off of the battery pack, or in series hybrid mode where the turbine generates electricity after the battery charge is depleted.

A pilot’s license will still be required to fly the TF-X, but Terrafugia says a five-hour training session is all it will take to learn how to operate the vehicle. However, the idea is that you won’t have to do much of the flying at all.

Thanks to the FAA’s NextGen program, which will require all aircraft to be equipped with satellite transponders sending their exact location to a centralized air traffic management system starting in 2020, the TF-X could be able to fly entirely by itself from takeoff to landing. The pilot will still be ultimately responsible for the operation of the vehicle, and can fly it manually, but shouldn’t need to do more than enter a destination into a navigation system, sit back and enjoy the ride.

A 500-mile range is planned along with a top speed of 200 mph, and a built-in parachute will bring it safely to the ground in the event of any major mechanical failures along the way.

But don’t plan to impress the neighbors by lifting off from your driveway just yet. Terrafugia says the powerful prop wash of the TF-X will require a clear 100-foot diameter zone for takeoffs and landings, which will likely need to be regulated like helicopter pads are today. Terrafugia envisions more of these being established by cities and towns with the advent of vehicles like the TF-X.

They’ll have plenty of time to sort it out. Terrafugia figures it’ll be 8 to 10 years before the TF-X makes it from the drawing board to the skies, and even the Transition is still a couple of years away from entering production. The company is aiming to start delivering the $279,000 vehicles in early 2015.

Detroit Electric unveils $135G battery-powered sports car

  • de 660.JPG

More than 100 years after it began making cars, Detroit Electric is back in business.

The automaker on Wednesday is unveiling in Detroit the SP:01, a limited-edition electric sports car.

Detroit Electric was founded in 1906 and built 13,000 electric cars. Among its customers were Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller and Henry Ford's wife, Clara. But the company halted production in 1939, overcome by the Great Depression and drivers' growing preference for gasoline-fueled engines.

Detroit Electric was revived five years ago by Albert Lam, a former Lotus Cars and Apple Inc. executive. The company has set up offices in Detroit's historic Fisher Building and plans to build its cars in Michigan.

The two-seat, $135,000 SP:01 has a top speed of 155 miles per hour and can go from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, the same as BMW's high-performance M5 sedan. Detroit Electric says it will be the world's fastest pure electric production car.

Its closest competitor, the electric Tesla Model S sedan, goes from zero to 60 in 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.

Detroit Electric said the SP:01 can go for an estimated 190 miles between battery charges. A home charging station can fully charge the car in a little more than four hours. The charging unit can detect if the home loses power and use the car's stored electrical energy as a backup power source.

Detroit Electric will make 999 SP:01s. They'll be sold worldwide starting in August.

Facebook unveils new home on Android

Facebook is unveiling a new Android product Thursday, a move that comes as a fast-growing number of its 1.06 billion users access it on smartphones and tablet computers.

Advertisers are not far behind. Though mobile ads have been a big concern for Facebook's investors since before the company's initial public offering last May, some of that worry has subsided as Facebook began muscling its way into the market.

Last year, the company began showing ads to its mobile audience by splicing corporate sponsorships and content into users' news feeds, which also includes updates from friends and brands they follow. Among the challenges Facebook faces now is showing people mobile ads without annoying or alienating them.

The mobile advertisement market is growing quickly. That's thanks in large part to Facebook and Twitter, which also entered the space in 2012. Research firm eMarketer expects U.S. mobile ad spending to grow 77 percent this year to $7.29 billion, from $4.11 billion last year.

As for Thursday's event at the company's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters, speculation has centered on a mobile phone, made by HTC Corp., that deeply integrates Facebook into the Android operating system. The move comes as Facebook works to evolve from its Web-based roots to a "mobile-first" company, as its mantra goes.

"What Facebook wants is to put itself at the front of the Android user experience for as many Facebook users as possible and make Facebook more elemental to their customers' experience," said Forrester analyst Charles Golvin.

EMarketer said Wednesday that it expects Facebook Inc. to reap $965 million in U.S. mobile ad revenue in 2013. That's about 2.5 times the $391 million in 2012, the first year that Facebook started showing mobile ads.

Clark Fredricksen, vice president at eMarketer, said it's "tough to speculate" how much effect Thursday's announcement would have on ad revenue.

At the same time, he says "there are some clear reasons why a deeper integration with mobile operating systems and handsets make sense for Facebook. At the end of the day, the more deeply Facebook can engage consumers, no matter what device or operating system or handset," the better.

Facebook's rival, Google Inc., makes the Android software that Facebook and HTC would be using under the widely speculated scenario. Google makes the software available on an open-source basis, meaning others including rivals are free to adapt it to their needs. Amazon.com Inc. does just that in modifying Android to run its Kindle tablet computers.

Facebook is No. 2 behind Google Inc. when it comes to mobile advertisements, and it isn't expected to surpass the online search leader any time soon. Google dominates the mobile search market with 93 percent of U.S. mobile search advertising dollars, according to eMarketer. Online music service Pandora Inc. is in third place when it comes to mobile ad dollars, followed by Twitter.

Tesla Motors unveils leasing program

Tesla Motors Inc., after building anticipation for several days with social-media teasers promising a significant development, on Tuesday said it would do what all other makers have done for years: offer lease financing on its electric cars, The Wall Street Journal reports.

to structure leases that allow consumers to put the value of federal and state electric-car tax credits, which range from $7,500 to $15,000, toward the cost of a down payment.

The Palo Alto, Calif., company said the financing deal, which combines elements of a five-year loan and a three-year lease, would allow customers with good credit to put 10% down on a Tesla Model S sedan that costs about $80,000 and drive it for about $1,199 a month out of pocket for up to 66 months.

Tesla shares fell 2.3% in after-hours trading after closing up 41 cents at $44.34 in 4 p.m. trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock is up more than $6 since its March 28 close.

Like established luxury-car brands, Tesla's plan would take back its cars at the end of the lease. It is guaranteeing Model S customers they'll receive a trade-in value equivalent to that of a Mercedes-Benz S-class sedan.

The company said its Chief Executive Elon Musk "is personally standing behind that guarantee to give customers absolute peace of mind about the value of the asset they are purchasing."

Tesla's lease caps several days of anticipation touched off when Mr. Musk tweeted last week that he had a "really exciting @Tesla announcement coming" and that he was "going to put my money where my mouth is in v[ery] major way."

What customers would pay out of pocket will vary considerably based on their financial circumstances. A calculator on Tesla's website indicates that avoided gasoline costs and business tax deductions would lower the $1,199 monthly cost for its more expensive model, with a 265-mile government certified range, to about $543 a month. That figure includes about $100 a month from not going to a gas station to fill up, time Tesla values at $100 an hour.

Mr. Musk, in an interview, said that Tesla's less expensive model, with a 208-mile range, could be acquired for an out-of-pocket monthly payment of about $500 if the customer could take business tax deductions for the car.

Hagel unveils $1B plan to beef up missile defense, eyeing new sites on East Coast

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel unveiled Friday a $1 billion Pentagon plan to beef up missile defense in response to threats from North Korea, saying part of the plan would be to explore three new sites for ground-based interceptors.

One of the potential sites would be at Alaska's Fort Greeley, which already is home to missile silos. The other two potential locations haven't been disclosed but would be somewhere on the East Coast.

Under the plan, first reported Thursday by Fox News, the Pentagon would commit at least 14 additional ground-based interceptors to Fort Greeley and send an additional radar system to Japan, with a cost for the project estimated at just under $1 billion.

The announcement follows a recent threat from Pyongyang of a "pre-emptive" nuclear strike on the United States. Officials are signaling that they are taking North Korea's young, new ruler, Kim Jong Un, seriouusly.

"The young lad ought to be deterred," Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman Adm. Winnefeld said Friday at the news conference to announce the missile defense plan.

The extra interceptors on the West Coast, designed to counter attacks from an intercontinental ballistic missile, would bring the total number of interceptors to 44, a plan originally proposed by the Bush administration. President Obama stopped the deployment of the additional interceptors when he took office in 2009, leaving the total number at 30.

Congressional sources claim that by stalling the original plan and forcing the military to bring back on line silos that otherwise would have been operational, the Obama administration has effectively wasted millions in taxpayer’s dollars.

It’s a sentiment that is not likely to sit well with conservative lawmakers when the plan is announced on Monday, particularly as they seek new austerity measures.

An Obama administration official tells Fox News that the increase in interceptors is a logical response to an evolving threat from North Korea and that “anyone who suggests we should have stayed the course” with the Bush administration’s plan is engaging in “Monday morning quarterbacking.”

This official says the North Korean threat is much different from what it was in 2009. Along with the continued testing of nuclear weapons and longer-range delivery systems, the North Koreans have advanced their mobile missile capability, even within the last six to eight months.

“What we were defending against (from North Korea) four years ago was a single rogue missile, now with the mobile missile developing you have got to be able to counter multiple missile threats … so you have to expand your capability.”

Whether intentional or not, the announcement also coincides with 30th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative speech.  The nation’s first ground-based interceptors were set up in 2002 under President George W. Bush.

Fox News' Justin Fishel contributed to this report.

McDonald’s unveils the Egg White Delight McMuffin

McDonald’s will be rolling out their Egg White Delight, a yolk-free version of their Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich, in locations nationwide starting April 22, the company has confirmed to The Daily Meal.

The breakfast sandwich, which contains 250 calories (compared to the Egg McMuffin's 300) was tested in Atlanta and Austin markets last November.

The egg whites are cooked free-form on the griddle with a spatula (as opposed to the more common microwaved version sold by competitors including Dunkin’ Donuts), and will join a slice of white cheddar cheese and Canadian bacon on a whole-grain English muffin. Egg whites will also be made available on all the other breakfast sandwiches the company offers.

"We’ve been listening to our customers, and they want premium options," McDonald’s external communications manager Tyler Litchenberger told The Daily Meal. "We can’t just limit egg whites to one menu item. We want to provide variety, and the ability to customize anything. We’ll even not add salt to your fries if you want."

The company will also be introducing a few additional menu items within the next few months: Premium McWraps in three varieties — chicken and bacon, chicken and ranch, and sweet chile chicken — will be available nationally March 18, and McCafé blueberry pomegranate smoothies will hit menus May 15.

Google unveils talking shoes that 'motivate' you to move

Because inventing Google Glass wasn't impressive enough, the tech giant unveiled a pair of talking shoes at SXSW.

Calm down, Google Shoes are not going to be a thing. The experiment was designed to highlight its new advertising platform called Art, Copy and Code.

Google hacked a pair of Adidas sneakers to show "how you can use objects to tell stories on the web today," Aman Govil, head of the advertising team told ABC.

The shoes can tell the person wearing them what they are doing (or aren't doing) and can relay that information to their smartphone via a speaker in the tongue of the shoe.

The sneakers also house a small computer, accelerometer, pressure sensor, a gyroscope and Bluetooth.

The experiment is meant to work the way many other fitness gadgets do, relaying information about your activity and berating you when you're not being active enough.

"If you put what the shoe knows through an algorithmic logic engine, it can translate it into copy," Govil said. "Now if you give that copy to an interesting copy writer, you could give the shoe personality. One shoe could be the trash-talking shoe."

It's a novel idea but given that it needs a phone to function, there's probably no need for your shoes to be the gadgets that do the talking. All Google really demonstrated was that the sneakers could do what a smartphone is already capable of.
